Foundation Writing PT · Sentences · Paragraphs · Short texts

Start with sentences and reach the 4.0 you need to begin mock tests.

If you have rarely written a paragraph in English, a full mock test is too early. Practise three levels in 30-minute sessions — fixing faulty sentences, one paragraph, a short essay — and get scored on the IELTS band. Clear a level target twice in a row and you move up; clear level 3 and you are ready to begin IELTS or TOEFL mock tests.

Test format

  • Task 1 · Sentence fixes / table summary / short letter

    10–12 min suggested40–90 words

Level 1 rewrites five faulty sentences and adds a detail to each. Level 2 summarises a small table in two or three sentences. Level 3 writes a short letter covering three points.

  • Task 2 · One paragraph / two sides / four-paragraph essay

    18–20 min suggested80–200 words

Level 1 is one paragraph with a topic sentence and two reasons. Level 2 is your view and the opposite view in two paragraphs. Level 3 is a short essay with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion — IELTS Task 2 at a shorter length.

Assessment criteria

  • TR

    Task Response

Did the text do what the instructions asked? A list of sentences where a paragraph was asked for, or no opinion where one was asked for, is capped here.

  • CC

    Coherence and Cohesion

Can a reader follow it? Is there a topic sentence, and are and, but and because in the right places?

  • LR

    Lexical Resource

Are the words the right ones, spelt correctly and in the right form, without the same word repeated over and over?

  • GRA

    Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Does every sentence have a verb? Do subject and verb agree? Are tense, articles and plurals right? This is where Band 4.0 is decided.

What the mock test does

  • Scored on the IELTS 0–9 band

A 4.0 in foundation means the same as a 4.0 in a mock test, so your trend carries over when you move up.

  • Korean instructions and an example

Every task comes with Korean instructions and a one-paragraph example on a different topic. You never stall because you do not know what to write.

  • Plain-language diagnosis, three things at most

Sentence-level faults first — missing verbs, tense, articles — and only one or two things to fix next time. The model answer is a reachable Band 5.0.

  • Two passes in a row and you move up

Clear the level target twice in a row to advance. Clear level 3 and you are marked exam-ready and pointed to the IELTS or TOEFL plans.
