Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most often about the service, the mock tests, scoring, billing and your account.

The service

  • What is Writing PT?

You take an IELTS or TOEFL Writing mock test under real exam conditions, and an AI scores your response against the published criteria. You then see which sentences held the score down, why, and what to change. The point is not the number at the top of the page but the prescription underneath it.

  • Can I take both IELTS and TOEFL?

You choose one exam when you register. Subscriptions run per exam family, so you cannot switch part-way through a billing period. A switch you request takes effect from the next billing period. If you are preparing for both at once, you would need a subscription for each.

  • Can I practise IELTS Academic or General Training?

Both. You choose a default module when you register, and you can switch the module each time you start a test. One IELTS subscription and the same test credits cover both. The two modules share the 60-minute timing and the marking criteria and differ only in Task 1 — Academic summarises a graph, table, process or map, while General Training asks for a letter. You can change your default module at any time in Settings.

  • Are you connected to the official test bodies?

No. Writing PT is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by the organisations that administer IELTS or TOEFL. IELTS is a trade mark of the British Council, IDP and Cambridge; TOEFL is a trade mark of ETS. Both belong to their respective owners.

  • Can you score handwritten responses?

Not yet. At the moment only responses typed into the app are scored. Recognising a photographed handwritten script is a development goal, not a current feature. Even if you are preparing for a paper-based sitting, you will need to type your practice responses for now.

  • Can I take a test on my phone?

Scores and feedback are designed to read well on a phone. For taking a test we recommend a laptop or desktop, because the real exam is typed and you need to produce a long piece of writing within a time limit.

Mock tests

  • Is the first mock test really free?

Yes. Registering a subscription starts a 7-day free trial and your first mock test costs nothing. Cancel before the trial ends and you are not charged, including for the test you already took.

  • Will I get the same prompt twice?

You are never assigned a set you have already taken. We check your attempt history and pick from the sets you have not seen. There is one deliberate exception: the rewrite that follows a prescription. Rewriting the same prompt after a diagnosis is how you measure whether the fix worked, so the prompt is repeated on purpose.

  • How many tests can I take in a month?

Standard includes 4 mock tests per month. Pro has no monthly limit, but is capped at 3 attempts per day to keep the system stable and costs predictable. A rewrite of the same prompt after a prescription is handled separately from your allowance.

  • What happens if my connection drops mid-test?

Your draft is saved periodically, so you can carry on once the connection comes back. If a failure on our side means the response was not saved or not scored, the attempt is not counted against your allowance and we restore it so you can take it again.

  • What happens when the timer runs out?

Whatever you have written is submitted automatically and scored. Practising under real conditions is the only way for the diagnosis to catch problems with pacing. If your response falls short of the expected length, the feedback says so.

Scoring and feedback

  • Will my score here match my real test score?

No. The score is a prediction produced from the published assessment criteria, and it may differ from an official IELTS or TOEFL result. The Company makes no promise that the two will match. Treat it as a way to see which parts of your writing are weak and whether they improve, not as a verdict on whether you would pass.

  • Why does detailed feedback need my consent?

The score summary is shown to everyone. Detailed feedback is different: the sentence-level diagnosis, the root-cause analysis, the prescriptions and the model answer are produced by analysing your response together with your learning history. That is the personalised study notification service, so it needs your optional consent to use personal information. You can withdraw it at any time from your account settings.

  • What happens to my writing?

Your response is sent to an AI model operated by Anthropic PBC in the United States for scoring and feedback, and is stored in your account with the result as part of your learning history. You keep the copyright; the Company does not take ownership. Where responses are used to improve scoring quality or compile statistics, they are first processed so that individuals cannot be identified, and anything you delete from your learning records is excluded from further use.

  • What if I disagree with a diagnosis?

Every diagnosis is shown next to the sentence it refers to, with the reasoning behind it. If it still does not convince you, flag it from the result screen. Flagged cases feed back into refining the criteria, and if we confirm a clear error we restore that attempt to your allowance.

Billing and subscriptions

  • If I only use the free trial and then cancel, will I be charged?

No. Cancel from your account settings within 7 days of subscribing and the first charge never happens, including for the free test you took during the trial. If you do not cancel within the trial, the first charge is made on the day it ends.

  • How does payment work?

Charges are made monthly through the payment gateway PortOne, using KakaoPay recurring payment. A billing key is issued when you subscribe, and the Company does not store card numbers or other payment credentials. We email you the date and amount before each charge.

  • How do I cancel?

From subscription management in your account settings. No phone call, no paperwork, no cancellation fee. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

  • Can I get a refund part-way through?

Within 7 days of a charge, with no mock test taken in that billing period, you get the full amount back. If you have taken tests, Standard is refunded by remaining attempts and Pro pro rata by remaining days. Attempts you have already taken and seen results for are excluded. The Refund Policy has the full rules.

  • Do you sell credit packs?

No. Writing PT is monthly subscription only. Writing does not improve by cramming attempts into one sitting; it improves by writing and revising on a regular rhythm, so the product is built around that rhythm.

Account and privacy

  • Can I use the service without agreeing to marketing messages?

Yes. Consent to marketing is a separate, optional item with no bearing on the paid service. Declining it places no restriction on taking tests, scoring or feedback. If you do consent you can withdraw at any time, and we never send marketing messages between 21:00 and 08:00.

  • Can I sign up with Kakao?

Yes. You can register with an email address or with a Kakao account. Signing up with Kakao creates your account from the account identifier, email address and profile name that Kakao supplies. You then have no separate password to remember, but if you disconnect the Kakao account you will need to set up another way to sign in.

  • What happens to my writing if I close my account?

Your account, responses and scoring records are deleted without undue delay. Records that Korean law requires us to keep are held separately first: payment records for 5 years, consumer complaint records for 3 years, and access logs for 3 months. Deleted responses and feedback cannot be recovered, so download anything you want to keep before closing the account.

  • Can I delete a single response?

Yes, from the learning records page. A deleted response disappears from your history and is excluded from any further use for improving scoring quality. The attempt itself is not credited back to your allowance.

Scores rise on accurate diagnosis, not on more pages written.

Subscribe and your first mock test is free. Cancel within 7 days and nothing is charged.
